6 Tips for Hiring Long-Term Employees Who Are Loyal to Your Business

Having a revolving door of employees is a sign of trouble. If you find yourself constantly hiring new employees because your existing employees leave, then that means you may have to look into employee retention tactics. Whether you have full-time or part-time workers at your factory or warehouse, having loyal employees who stick with you for years is essential to success.

Long-term employees are committed to your business because they feel satisfied with their work and adequately rewarded for their efforts. How does this benefit your business? Long-term employees are already onboarded and trained, ready to start every shift as an expert in their role. They don’t need micromanaging, they know how to get the job, and they are reliable based on their past performance. Plus, the cost of hiring and training new employees can go into the tens of thousands, so it’s better for your bottom line to nurture your long-term workers and ensure they stay with you for years to come.

1.    Give employees the resources they need to succeed

Many employees leave their part-time, full-time, permanent, and temporary roles because they feel stuck and frustrated. A lot of the time, employees have too many obstacles in their way in order to do well at their jobs. In order to cultivate loyalty, it’s important to give employees the resources they need to excel in their role – such as time, budgets, processes, tools, and more.

For example, if you’re expecting an employee to complete a task that requires a specific software but haven’t purchased that software for the employee, you’re not setting them up for success. Work on removing the obstacles in the employees’ way so they can do their best work and feel more invested in their role.

2.    Invest in training and development

Most factory and warehouse workers are willing to learn new skills in order to move up in the company. Consider what training and development programs you can put in place to incentivize employees to advance their career. For example, you can provide safety training, forklift training, management training, and so much more. These types of programs are a great pull for employees and show them you want to see them succeed at your organization for the long term.

3.    Reward commitment

Do you celebrate employee milestones, such as their first anniversary with the company or the first time they beat their own packing record? It may seem like a small gesture, but it goes a long way to showing you appreciate and recognize the employees’ commitment. You don’t need to throw a party or anything complicated. A simple card or a company-wide email announcement is a simple way to reward employee commitment and show your gratitude. At larger milestones, such as five years or ten years with the company, consider giving the employee a heartfelt gift.

4.    Recognize employee performance

One of the reasons factory and warehouse employees leave for other roles is because they don’t feel as though their work is appreciated by the company. If you’re looking to foster loyalty in your employees and want them to stay with you for years to come, it’s vital to recognize their achievements in an authentic way.

For example, if the employee receives a training certificate or handles a large project on their own, take the time to commend them on a job well done. You can send out a company announcement, hold a small lunch gathering, or even just get them a small gift card to show your appreciation, but it’s vital to let them know you see their hard work and thank them for it.

5.    Celebrate personal employee milestones

Weddings, babies, graduations, birthdays, and more – employees have lives outside of work, too. While you don’t have to know everything about every employee, knowing key details certainly helps to build long-term relationships. Saying happy birthday or congratulating an employee on their engagement are simple yet effective ways to create personal connection and encourage loyalty. Just remember to equally celebrate personal milestones for all employees, instead of favouring one employee over another.

6.    Involve employees in company decision making

When employee turnover rates rise, it’s usually because employees don’t feel like they are making a difference at the company. They don’t see how their day-to-day work is connected to the larger goals of the company, and they don’t feel like their contribution matters. Sometimes, employees feel like their voices aren’t heard and that they don’t have an opportunity to make changes that they think will have a major impact in the business.

Involving employees in company decision-making is an excellent way to increase loyalty and retention. Through company meetings, town halls, online surveys, and more, you can gather feedback from employees about parts of the business they want to improve, and implement their ideas wherever feasible. This shows employees that their ideas are valuable to the business and that they are invested in the betterment of the company.
